Yours Truly

Scientist | Bibliophile | Writer

Welcome to The Socially Awkward Scientist, my life blog in which I document my life experiences amid the chaos of adulthood and every other awkward moment in-between that is part and parcel of being a socially introverted twenty-something year old.

I am currently a practicing optometrist but also a graduate in medical biochemistry; I created this blog back in 2014 when I spent the summer abroad working in a hospital lab in Africa in all its different units - from blood transfusion and TB clinics, to the labs of molecular biology - before going on to observe surgery on a GapMedics placement and seeing the reality of medical poverty in the third world, all of which you can read about here.

While it was only meant to be a brief diary of sorts to reflect on my experiences at the time, I decided to carry that on and expand it to my wider life experiences. My academic journey since has been one that has made the twenties something of a roller coaster ride and it is one that made me take the blog further; my little writing space is now home to my reflective ramblings and creative writing, travels, and all else that keeps me happy from book reviews to football. It is, I guess, an insight into what makes my life my own. Here's hoping that my tales and musings inspire you somewhat and make you a loyal reader.

Happy Reading!
